With over 8 billion web pages on the Internet today, search engine visibility is vital for a website to have a strong presence. According to Pew/Internet, the percentage of Internet users who use search engines on a typical day has been steadily rising from about one-third of all users in 2002, to a new high of just under one-half (49%). A web study by OneUp showed that search users are up to six times more likely to click on the first few organic results than they are to choose any of the paid results, while an eye tracking study showed that 50 percent of users begin their search by scanning the top organic results. Other studies have shown that 80 percent of search engine users click on organic listings, leaving an underwhelming 20 percent who are clicking the paid listings.
